County adopts sales tax ordinance

Voters approved a 1 percent local option sales tax in November, requiring commissioners to adopt an ordinance making the tax a reality. 


Outdoor education effort at local school draws national attention

The kids at Sawtooth Elementary have been included in a recent issue of the Healthy Schools Program Success Stories Newsletter. The story is titled “Being Active Outside Despite the Cold” and chronicles an outing last spring, when Sawtooth Elementary students made the most of the coldest days of winter on snowshoes.

County looks into hiring manager

Cook County Commissioners are thinking about revamping the county’s management structure. Instituting a county administrator position has been a topic of discussion on and off over the years. With the passage of the 1 percent local option sales tax, the board is now seriously considering the matter.


NE Minnesota deer harvest down 20 percent

With 98 percent of registrations reported across Northeastern Minnesota, the 2009 deer harvest is down 20 percent from last year, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.


Homestead property deadline Dec. 15

Cook County Assessor Mary Black is reminding property owners of the Dec.15 deadline to file a Minnesota homestead application.

If you have purchased a home in Cook County in 2009, and occupy the property as your primary residence before December 1, 2009, you may qualify to receive the homestead classification for taxes payable in 2010.


County holds septic hearing

Cook County is in the process of drafting a new septic treatment ordinance.  The state of Minnesota is requiring counties to adopt ordinances based on new rules issued by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.


City supports library expansion plan

The city of Grand Marais went on record Wednesday in support of the public library expansion plan. It did so as the library board nears the time it will present more formal plans to the county board as a result of the 1 percent sales tax passage. Currently the plan proposes a 3,000 square foot addition for an estimated $700,000 price tag.
