Forest Service says Gunston Lake Fire in Lake County under control

The U.S. Forest Service has provided more information on a wildfire in the Kawishiwi Ranger District, west of Isabella in Lake County. The fire appears to have started near Gunston Lake, near Slate Lake. According to the Forest Service, the cause of the fire is not yet known.

At 4:40 p.m. on Friday, the fire was estimated to be 15 acres in size, however today the Forest Service reports the blaze was halted at eight acres.

Fire crews worked to halt the fire’s progression in 80 degree weather yesterday with gusts up to 20 miles per hour.

Joining the local fire crews the visiting Midewin Interagency Hotshot Crew from Midewin National Tall Grass Prairie, in Wilmington, Illinois.

The cause is under investigation, but the Forest Service says no connection with recent prescribed fire suspected.
