New entity formed to manage Banadad ski trail

The 28 kilometer long Banadad Trail is under new management. After 20 years of managing the trail system, Ted Young of Boundary Country Trekking is handing the job over to the newly formed non-profit Banadad Trail Association.

ISD166 school district faces big budget cuts

Cook County Schools will start the new year facing some difficult issues. The ISD166 School Board has raised the property tax levy, but Superintendent Beth Schwarz says it won’t be enough to counter the shifts and cuts coming from the state. Staff and program reductions are on the table as is a four-day week – and an operating referendum is all but certain in 2010.

County board considers adding a new staff position

Back in 1976 Cook County floated a referendum to establish a county administrator position to help streamline and re-organize county government. The issue failed. Since then the laws have changed and there’s no longer a need for voter approval.

Gypsy moth number up in county

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) caught more than twice the number of gypsy moths this year over last year – most of them in the northeastern part of the state. Nearly all the trapped moths were caught in St. Louis, Lake and Cook counties.

A Grand Marais man who discovered his wife was having an affair is accused of using a crowbar, knife and gun to force the other man to have sexual relations with his wife.

AEOA reopens job skills office in Grand Marais

This winter the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency continues to offer bus rides around the county as well as energy and weatherization assistance. It has also recently re-opened its adult education and job skills office in Grand Marais with Dawn Byholm as employment counselor and adult basic education instructor. WTIP’s Jay Andersen interviewed Dawn.

Sawtooth snack success noticed

Sawtooth Elementary and Cook County Schools Health Council were highlighted with a “success story” in a recent report to the Minnesota Department of Health.  The December report is an update on the status of the State Health Improvement Program (SHIP) grant in Northeast Minnesota.

Broadband funding begins to roll out; local grant delayed

The White House announced that $182 million in stimulus funds from the federal government designated for broadband internet were dispensed on Thursday, Dec. 17. Vice President Joe Biden made the announcement in the rural town of Dawsonville, Ga.
