Severe thunderstorms expected across BWCAW and northeast Minnesota
Thunderstorms and severe weather are expected throughout the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and areas across the northeast region of Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon and evening.
The highest probability for severe weather is between 3 and 9 p.m. this evening, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
Starting at approximately 3 p.m., the storm will reach the western edge of the BWCAW before continuing east into Lake and Cook Counties by approximately 6 p.m.
The storm is expected to bring damaging wind gusts and large hail, potentially up to 2 inches in diameter, to the region.
“If you are currently camping or planning to head out, take extra precautions right now to secure your campsites,” the NWS said in a Facebook post Wednesday. “Have a plan to seek safe shelter or consider altering your travel plans until the storms pass.”
A first wave of storms rolled across northern Minnesota and the Iron Range in the early morning hours of Wednesday. Meteorologists said there will be a break in the weather system before the second round of severe storms sweeps across the region.
“Multiple rounds of strong to severe storms are possible,” the NWS said.
