Structure fire destroys garage in Grand Marais

Firefighters, first responders, and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office were called to a garage fire in Grand Marais at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The fire was reported at 120 W 2nd St. The property is known as The Bunkhouse, a building typically used to house seasonal staff in Grand Marais. It is owned by the former owners of the Blue Water Cafe, Dan and Melody Riddle. The Bunkhouse building is formerly known as the old funeral home.

The garage, attached to The Bunkhouse building, was also used as housing and occupied by a tenant.

Law enforcement contacted Dan and Melody Riddle following the report of the fire. The Riddle’s quickly arrived on the scene.

Responding firefighters worked to put out the fire and cut a hole in the top of the garage. The fire was quickly contained. The larger Bunkhouse building did not encounter any fire damage.
Fire crews cleared the scene by 7:04 p.m.

Local law enforcement told WTIP the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. No injuries were reported.
