AARP Driver Safety Classes

Minnesota drivers aged 55+ receive a 10% auto insurance discount by taking an approved eight-hour driver safety class. Drivers maintain the discount by taking a four-hour refresher class every three years. AARP sponsors the beginning and refresher classes at various locations in Cook County.

AARP members receive a discount.

People unable to fit a class into their schedules can take the AARP classes online and will receive the statutory insurance discount. The link is www.aarpdriversafety.org.

Dog Park now open in Grand Marais

Where: 
Gunflint Horse Arena, Grand Marais

The new dog park located at the Gunflint Horse Arena is now open. The park provides a fenced in space that allows well behaved dogs to be off leash safe from traffic, predators, and traps, while socializing with other dogs. The dog park is located near the corner of the "old" Gunflint Trail and the "new" Gunflint Trail, just north of the Recycling Center in Grand Marais. Open “dog parties” are held every Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 and Sunday afternoons from 3 until 5.  More information about the Gunflint Dog Park is available online at godognorthshore.org.

Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center

Sugarloaf Cove southwest of Schroeder is a 35-acre preserved site, with foot trails leading to a beautiful sheltered cove on the lake, and including a 7.5-acre Minnesota Scientific and Natural Area, open to the public. Trails are open from dawn to dusk year-round. The Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center is open during the summer on weekends, and on weekdays when staffed by volunteers.

Sugarloaf Cove is located approximately six miles southwest of Schroeder, at mile 73.3, 9096 Hwy 61. Care Partners seeks “Senior Rides” volunteers

Who: 
Care Partners of Cook County

Care Partners of Cook County is seeking volunteers for their “Senior Rides” program. The volunteers will provide rides for those 60 and older to out of county medical, dental, and eye appointments. In addition, Senior Rides will offer rides within Cook County for medical appointments, as well as wellness and social activities. Volunteers will be reimbursed for mileage.
