Don Langan's tenure as Ely school superintendent ended abruptly February 3. Langan was Cook County Schools superintendent from 1992 to 1997 and oversaw the campus building project and referendum. In a surprise move, Langan resigned his Ely position effective immediately. He had been scheduled to retire at the end of the current school year.
Ely school officials offered few details, largely sticking to a prepared statement drafted by school board chairman Ray Marsnik. According to the Ely Echo newspaper, Langan could not be immediately reached for comment.
High school principal and director of district operations Kim Belcastro, who had already been tabbed to replace Langan, said she expects to be named interim superintendent when the school board holds its regular meeting Monday, Feb. 14. Belcastro said she had no indication that Langan was planning to leave.
