100th anniversary of the construction of the Outlaw Bridge

The Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais celebrates the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Outlaw Bridge on Saturday, July 29th at 1 p.m. There will presentations by Thunder Bay Lakehead University professor Beverly Soloway and local history buff Dan Helmerson, followed by an ice cream social. Harbor walking tour July 29th

The Cook County Historical Museum hosts a harbor walking tour on Saturdays, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will view photos and hear about the development of the harbor and the community, and learn how the harbor was once a logging industry shipping mecca. Clearwater Historic Lodge and Canoe Outfitter’s 91st birthday

Getting Acquainted with Local Spiders

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center hosts Getting Acquainted with Local Spiders, by author and retired teacher, Larry Weber, on July 30th, from 2 to 3 p.m. Attendees will learn more about common spiders and go on a walk to identify some of the local spiders. Volunteer drivers needed

Senior Rides Program

Senior Rides Program needs volunteer drivers to provide rides for those 60 and older to out-of-county medical, dental, and eye appointments, to meet transportation needs not met by Arrowhead Transit or friends and relatives. Senior Rides also offers transportation within Cook County for medical appointments, as well as wellness and social activities. Volunteers are reimbursed for mileage and can choose their assignments. Classes for building pallet gardens

Biggest blueberry contest

The biggest blueberry contest goes through Saturday, August 12th. Berries will be measured by weight and must be picked fresh. There are three rounds in the contest for the biggest blueberry, with prizes also awarded through random drawings. Hiring international workers workshop

The Cook County Chamber is organizing a workshop for employers interested in hiring international workers through the H2B and J1 student visa programs. The workshop will be at the Higher Ed campus on Thursday, September 7th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Presenters are Loan Huynh (WIN), focusing on the H2B program; and Bruce Kerfoot, on the J1 program.
