Talent Development Program Workshop

Cook County Higher Education hosts a talent development program workshop for business, presented by Teri Dudley of Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training.  The program is Thursday, March 29, from 9 to 10 am; a light breakfast will be provided.

Cook County Firewise Workshop

Cook County Firewise is holding a workshop to help Forestry Contractors access contract work, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm on Thursday, March 29, at the Cook County Community Center.   The workshop is intended for both loggers and landscape/tree service businesses to help decipher the government contract bidding process, learn about current and future hand and mechanical work projects on public and private lands, and discuss challenges they may be facing. 

Green Dot - Bystander Intervention Training

Cook County High Education hosts three sessions of bystander intervention training, Friday, March 30, from noon to 2:30, and from 6 - 8:30 pm, as well as Saturday, March 21, from 10 am to 12:30 pm.  These sessions will cover how to recognize behaviors that may constitute domestic violence, bullying, sexual violence, stalking, and child abuse.  More information at (218)-387-3411 

Work assistance for senior adults

Arrowhead Economic Opporturnity Agency (AEOA) is offering a program that provides low-income senior adults job-search assistance and temporary employment. This federal program helps Cook County residents, aged 55 and over, rejoin the workforce by working in their community while receiving on-the-job training. The program also benefits non-profit organizations by providing them a part-time temporary paid worker.  More information is available from Jan Francisco at 218-327-6760.

Income tax assistance available

Cook County VITA Tax group

Cook County VITA Tax group is again assisting low and moderate income residents with their income taxes through April 12th. Assistance is available:

  • Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Center in Grand Marais 
  • Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Community Center in Grand Portage 
  • Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte
  • Every weekday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Grand Portage Post Office

Tree seedlings

Hedstrom Lumber Company offers tree seedlings, including red pine and white spruce, to the public, with up to 250 seedlings per household.  Anyone interested should email, with the number of seedlings and species desired by April 20.  Pickup day will be Friday, May 4. 

Gunflint Trail Canoe Races

Since 1976 neighbors, friends and businesses along the Gunflint Trail have planned and executed a celebration of summer life along the Trail at the annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races. The event raises funds to support the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department and again will be held at Gunflint Lodge on the south shore of Gunflint Lake, 45 miles up the Gunflint Trail on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, beginning at 4:00 pm.
