Lake County Fair

The Lake County Fair goes through Sunday, August 20th. The weekend includes live music, barrel races, horse shows, amateur talent contest, midway shows, and more. A full schedule and more information can be found at the lake county fair dot com.  
 

17th Annual Gitchi-Gami Trail Association North Shore Bike Ride

Starting and ending in Gooseberry Falls State Park

The 17th Annual Gitchi-Gami Trail Association North Shore Bike Ride takes place Saturday, August 19th. There are 8-, 28-, 37-, and 55-mile options, all starting and ending in Gooseberry Falls State Park on scenic Highway 61. More information is available online at ggta.org.
 

“Wolves at Our Door”

Grand Marais Public Library is hosting a presentation from the International Wolf Center in Ely on Saturday, August 19th at 10:30 a.m. “Wolves at Our Door” is an opportunity to learn about wolves, discuss concerns about them, and have questions answered by highly qualified wolf specialists. World Honey Bee Day

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center honors World Honey Bee Day on Saturday, August 19th, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • 12:30 p.m. there is a guided nature hike focusing on pollinators.
  • 1 p.m. there is a presentation by Mark Ditmanson on the diversity and importance of wild bee populations, and the practice of beekeeping in the boreal forest.
  • About 2 p.m. Master Gardeners, Maxene Lineham and Janet Ditmanson, will explain the rationale for providing pollinator plants and habitat in gardens.

Other activities include bumblebee identification, building for native bees, making seed paper, wax crafts, and children's bee and flower crafts. More information is available from Bonnie at 218-388-9915.
 

Interpretive hikes August 19th

On the Gunflint Trail 55 miles from Grand Marais

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center hosts interpretive hikes, Saturdays, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Attendees will meet at the Nature Center wearing appropriate footwear for exploring on uneven ground. All hikes are family friendly and open to the public. Donations are appreciated. More information is available at chik-wauk.com.

Harbor walking tour August 19th

Cook County Historical Museum

The Cook County Historical Museum hosts a harbor walking tour Saturday, August 19th, from 1 to 2 pm. Participants will view photos and hear about the development of the harbor and the community, and learn how the harbor was once a logging industry shipping mecca. Cook County AA, Al-Anon, and CoDA Weekend Meetings, August 19th and 20th

There are regular meetings of AA, Al-Anon, and CoDA in Cook County.

Saturdays, there's an AA Open Meeting at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hovland.

Sundays, there's an AA Big Book Study Group at 6:30 p.m. at the Lutsen Town Hall.

“Legend of Loons” August 19th

Family fishing event on Lax Lake August 20th

Tettegouche (tetta-goosh) State Park will host a family fishing event on Sunday, August 20th, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Lax Lake. The program will teach the basics of fishing, including casting, knot tying, and catch and release techniques. Minnesota residents do not need a license for this event. Kids’ Day and Naturalist presentation August 22

Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center hosts complimentary Kids’ Day, Tuesday, August 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day includes a variety of hands-on activities, stories, hikes, and craft projects related to the history and nature of the Gunflint Trail. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Donations to cover the cost of materials are appreciated.

                    …and also on Tuesday….

A U. S. Forest Service naturalist presents a variety of Northwoods themed topics in the Nature Center, from 2 to 3 p.m. All programs are family friendly and complimentary.
