Volunteers
5,700 volunteer hours are contributed every year! Each week WTIP broadcasts 37 hours of locally produced programming - programming that is produced and aired by volunteers. And for every hour of broadcast, a volunteer has dedicated at a minimum 1–3 hours of preparation, research and interviewing prior to the program. This means that our on-air volunteers contribute at least 110 hours of work each week, totaling over 5,700 volunteer hours per year.
Then we need to add to that number the hours that the "behind the scenes" volunteers (office help, carpenters, committee members…) contribute and the numbers are well over 6,250 hours of volunteer time every year.
Our volunteers are there for the station and the community each week and through the years. Most of our volunteers have been with the station for over 6 years, and the number of volunteers is increasing with every passing year. The total number of volunteers has grown from 8 to 52 since WTIP’s humble beginning.

Thank you to all of our volunteers for helping to make WTIP a success!
Announcer Bob Carter Wins Statewide Public Radio Award

WTIP’s volunteer Bob Carter, long-time co-host of the Roadhouse, has been selected as the Independent Public Radio (IPR) Broadcaster of the Year award.
Carter has been involved with WTIP since the station’s inception in 1998. He contributes in many ways, giving generously of his time and talents to help WTIP bring quality programming to the community. He is the regular co-host (with Buck Benson) of the Roadhouse, and has also produced and hosted just about every other program WTIP offers, including political and other live forums, and local sports. Carter is always ready to lend a hand or a voice when needed. His humor, balance, professionalism and great interviewing skills make him a valuable asset to WTIP, and a well-deserved recipient of the Broadcaster of the Year award.

WTIP Tower and Engineering
WTIP broadcasts at:
- 25,000 watts at 90.7
- 140 watts at 91.7 translator on the Gunflint Trail
Coverage Area

WTIP Studios are located in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Although Cook County is our home-base, geographically WTIP serves Lake Superior’s north shore from Two Harbors, MN to the Thunder Bay area. With the addition of our translator, located above the Gunflint Lake, we also reach listeners along the entire length of the Gunflint Trail. And because Lake Superior poses no obstruction to our radio signal, communities along the south shore of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula receive our signal, too. Welcome Yoopers!
